Earth Celebrations Engaging Communities to Generate Ecological and Social Change through the Arts
Ecological City Workshops 2023
Earth Celebrations’ ECOLOGICAL CITY: Art & Climate Solutions Action Project
Art & Climate Solutions Workshops March-May 2023, Lower East Side, New York City
ECOLOGICAL CITY – Art & Climate Solutions Action project applies the arts to engage the community to learn, explore and take action on climate solution initiatives to mitigate climate change impacts of flooding, carbon pollution and the consequences of sea-level rise throughout the network of community gardens, neighborhood and East River Park waterfront on the Lower East Side of New York City. 9 months of partnership building, site/issue research and creative collaboration engage community participants to collaborate with Earth Celebrations’ artists-in-residence to create visual art, giant puppets, costumes and performances exploring local sites and their climate issues and solutions. The months to creative engagement workshops March-May culminate in the Ecological City: Art & Climate Solutions Pageant on Saturday May 13, 2023 featuring a spectacular procession of visual art and 21 sustainability site performances celebrating the inspiring urban ecosystem of grassroots climate solution initiatives and their importance to city and global climate challenges.
Earth Celebrations is a non-profit organization founded in 1991 on the Lower East Side of New York City by local action artist Felicia Young on the Lower East Side of New York City, to apply the arts to build community, collaboration and action on environmental issues and solutions. For the past 30 years, Earth Celebrations’ pioneering cultural strategies have engaged the community and mobilized action on climate change, coastal resiliency, river-waterfront restoration, water quality, species and habitat conservation, waste management and the preservation of community gardens, parks, and a healthy urban environment. Through collaborative arts projects Earth Celebrations cultivates diverse sector engagement bringing together environmental organizations, academic and cultural institutions, municipalities, government agencies, schools, community centers, artists and local residents to work together, mobilize action, develop solutions and achieve common goals.
