ECOLOGICAL CITY WORKSHOPS 2018-19

EARTH CELEBRATIONS’ CREATIVE CLIMATE ACTION –  ECOLOGICAL CITY – PUPPET & COSTUME WORKSHOPS

9 months of community engagement planning/design sessions and workshops engage gardeners, river-based groups, community centers, schools, youth and residents to collaborate with artists and environmental experts to develop visual art, giant puppets, costumes, performance, dance, music and poetry/spoken word works exploring climate resiliency and ecological sustainability  initiatives on the Lower East Side.  The artistic works, created in the workshops are featured in a culminating spectacular procession with 20 site performances throughout the Lower East Side neighborhood, gardens and East River Park waterfront.

Workshop sessions are offered free of cost, mid-February – mid-May 2018 Ecological Art Workshops led by 2 Artists-in-Residence (Lucrecia Novoa -puppet/sculpture & Michele Brody and Yelaine Rodriguez – costume/fiber arts).

The 40-foot Mobile Mural – LES Sustainable Ecosystem with Earth Celebrations’ Artist-in-Residence Katherine Freygang.

The Mobile Mural with 6 sections celebrates sustainability initiatives in the gardens and neighborhood, 2 sections of East River Park, Stuyvesant Cove and East River (species on and in the river).

Workshops throughout April engaged community in various areas of the Lower East Side through our Partners  including:

– NYC Parks Asser Levy Recreation Center with Solar One in Stuyvesant Cove area.
– LUNGS at Spring Gardens Festival on Avenue C & Sixth Street Community Center in Loisaida
– LES Ecology Center in the East River Park Two Bridges area with Friends of Corlears Hook Park, East River Alliance and East River Park Coalition.

The Mobile Mural was featured in the culminating Earth Celebrations’ Ecological City: Procession for Climate Solutions on Saturday, May 11, 2019, featuring spectacular visual art, giant puppets, costumes and 20 site-performances celebrating climate resiliency and ecological sustainability initiatives throughout the community gardens and East River Park waterfront park on the Lower Side.
