DESCRIPTION – Participants are invited to create and paint the flags featuring climate solutions and ecological sustainability images, from bio-swales and composting, to daffodils, trees, bees and more! The flags can also include data and climate facts. The flags will be strung together (like Tibetan prayer flags) and adorned on local garden fences throughout the Lower East Side for the Ecological City – Art & Climate Solutions Pop-Up Pageant on Saturday May 8, 2021 from 11am-5pm.
CREATE – For each strand, made of natural twine or another type of string, there will be eight or more flags of standard paper size, 8 ½ by 11 inches. Flags will be made of recyclable paper like copy paper, newspaper, or magazines, or any paper that would be otherwise be thrown away. Inspiration for the images will come from provided templates or raw reference images. Priming a base page is optional. Once you’ve sketched or printed your image, paint on! If you like, add a title, word, or phrase to describe your image or the climate solution you’ve chosen. You might also want to decorate your flag even more, by collaging on found materials like candy wrappers, tin foil, scrap fabrics, plastic bottle caps, bubble wrap, cardboard with glue. You can assemble your flags on twine by folding over top inch and stapling or delivering them to Earth Celebrations for assembly by April 14th.
TOOL KIT – A video tutorial from artist Katherine Freygang will be available online. Participants schools/organizations can request a zoom/facetime session to add inspiration and see what you have made. Katherine will also be leading an outdoor workshop Saturday April 17th 12-3pm in partnership with the Lower East Side Ecology Center located at the Fire Boat House the East River Park near Grand Street, following safety guidelines. (contact Earth Celebrations to request link to REFERENCE TOOL KIT).
DELIVER – Once your flags are dry and complete, you can arrange to drop them off or mail them in with USPS to – Earth Celebrations, 638 E. 6th Street, NY, NY 10009. Contact Earth Celebrations regarding drop off times.
